FACTS ABOUT OLYMPICS


·         First Summer Olympics in Athens, 1896.

·         First Winter Olympics in Chamonix, 1924.

·         First Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore, 2010.

·         First Winter Youth Olympics in Innsbruck, 2012.

·         London hosted the most Olympics – 1908, 1948, 2012

·         Cities hosted Olympics twice:

Summer Olympics

v  Paris – 1900, 1924

v  Stockholm – 1912, 1956

v  Los Angeles – 1932, 1984

v  Athens – 1896, 2004

v  Tokyo – 1964, 2020 (To be held)

Winter Olympics

v  St. Moritz – 1928, 1948

v  Lake Placid – 1932, 1980

v  Innsbruck – 1964, 1976

·         Only 4 Athletes have won medals at both Winter & Summer Olympics

Ø  Eddie Eagan (USA).

Ø  Jacob Tullin (Norway).

Ø  Luding Ruthenburg (East Germany).

Ø  Clara Hughes (Canada).

·         In 1896, Athens Olympics, the first place winners received silver medal & Olive Branches. Second Placed winners received bronze medal and the third placed received nothing.

·         In 1900, Paris Olympics, the winners received paintings instead of medals.

·         Women were first allowed to participate in 1900 at the second modern Olympic Games.

·         In 1904, St. Louis Olympics, the first gold, silver and Bronze medals where given.

·         The first opening ceremonies were held during the 1908 Olympic Games in London.

·         In 1912, Stockholm Olympics, the last gold medals where given. Nowadays only gold plated medals are given.

·         Because of World War I and World War II, there were no Olympic Games in 1916, 1940 & 1944.

·         In 1924, Paris Olympics, the first closing ceremony featured.

·         Tennis was played until 1924 & again included in 1988.

·         1936, Berlin Olympics was the first Olympics to be telecasted.

·         Gold medal winners of 1936 Berlin Olympics received a plant additionally.

·         In 1984, Los Angeles Olympics, China won their first medal.

·         2016, Rio Olympics to be the first Olympic to be held in South American Country.

·         In 2012, London Olympics, each country is represented by a female athlete.

·         Baseball & Softball were played for last time in 2008, Beijing Olympics.

·         Polo was played during 1900, 1908, 1920, 1924 & 1936 Olympics.

·         Great Britain is the only country to have one at least 1 gold medal at every Summer Olympics.

·         The United States has hosted the Summer Olympics more times than any other nation, four in total, St Louis 1904, Los Angeles 1932 & 1984, and Atlanta 1996.
