FACTS ABOUT OCEANS


                                        OCEANS

  • There are 5 oceans in the Earth.
  • Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Artic Ocean & Antarctic ocean.
  • 5 Oceans covers an area of 361,059,200 sq. km, which is 71% of earth surface.
  • The Pacific, the Atlantic & the Indian ocean covers 89% of the earth’s ocean surface.
  • Pacific ocean alone occupies one third of the earth surface
  • Oceans occupy 61% of the Northern Hemisphere and 81% of the Southern Hemisphere. So the Northern hemisphere is called as land hemisphere & southern hemisphere is called ocean hemisphere.
                                                    PACIFIC OCEAN

  • Pacific Ocean covers about 165 million sq. km, which is larger than the entire land surface of the Earth.
  • The Pacific Ocean separates Asia & Australia from the North & south.
  • Pacific Ocean is divided by equator as Northern Pacific & South Pacific.
  • The average depth of Pacific Ocean is 15,215 ft. (4028 m).
  • The deepest point in Pacific Ocean is Mariana Trench, 36,198 ft. (11,033 m).

ATLANTIC OCEAN

  • Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean.
  • The total area of Atlantic Ocean is 106,400,000 Sq. Km (41,100,000 sq. mi).
  • Atlantic Ocean covers 20% of the Earth’s land surface & 29% of Earth’s Water Surface.
  • Atlantic Ocean is the first Ocean to be crossed by ship and plane.
  • The average depth of Atlantic Ocean is 10,950 feet (3926 m).
  • The deepest point in Atlantic Ocean is Puerto Rico Trench 28,231 ft.
     
                                   INDIAN OCEAN

  • Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean.
  • The total area of India ocean is 73,556,000 sq.km (28,350,000 sq. mi)
  • Indian Ocean covers about 20% of earth’s water surface area. It also covers 14% of earth’s land surface area.
  • It lies between Africa on the West, Australian on the East, and Antarctica on the South & Asia on the North.
  • 90% of Indian Ocean lies to the South of the Equator.
  •  The average depth of Indian Ocean is 13,002 ft. (3963 m).
  • The deepest point on Indian Ocean is Java Trench, 25,344 ft.
                                        ANTARCTIC OCEAN
  • Antarctic Ocean is the fourth largest Ocean.
  • Its area is 20370000 Sq.km (7848000 Sq. miles).
  • It is considered as large circumpolar body of water totally encircling the continent of Antarctica.
  • The average depth of Antarctic Ocean is about 13100 – 16400 Ft (4000 meter to 5000 meter).
  • The deepest point on the Antarctic ocean is the southern end of the Sandwich Trench which is 23737 ft. (7236 m)
                                    ARCTIC OCEAN

  • It is the smallest ocean in the World.
  • Its covers an area of about 14,056,000 Sq. Km (5,427,000 sq. mi)
  • It is completely present in Northern hemisphere and North Pole
  • It is surrounded by North America and Eurasia.
  • The average depth of Arctic Ocean is 3406 feet.
  • The deepest Point on the Arctic Ocean is 17,880 ft. at Eurasia Basin.
